Keychron Q1

PROCESS

Passion project and an homage to my daily driver for the last couple of years.
Keychron Q1 the keyboard that started my love to mechanical keyboards.

I’ve started this project with a quick storyboard sketch. I didn’t want this animation to be complex, I wanted something simple and stylish, with the keyboard itsellf being the main focus.

When I had the shots sketched, I started thinking about the design. As always PureRef and Pinterest were my go-to tools for this. I’ve tried to find some references to the mood I had in my mind, something inspired by Microsoft's design team work, but slightly less stylistic. Also, Wes Cockx https://cream3d.com/ is a huge inspiration to me, so the color choise was obvious.

After the moodboard was ready, I went for the styleframes. Finding the look I was after was an easy job, so this part was rather quick. The only thing that bothered me was the consistency between the shots, I wanted to have more variations but didn’t want to add anything to the existing storyboard and didn’t want to ruin the feel with the unnecessary transition shots. So in the final version, I’ve changed a bit the beginning and ending parts of the animation. This way it feels less uniform and slightly more diverse, while staying true to the original style.

And here is the animatic. Since I've animated each scene separately and set everything to have nice transitions between the shots, this part was the easiest. I had a couple more shots made, but decided to ditch them, as it felt that they arent adding anything to the project.
