PROCESS
It all started with a storyboard sketch.
When working on personal stuff I tend to start with pen and paper, doing a rough sketch of what I have in mind. Oftentimes times it allows seeing the animation in just a couple of minutes and understanding what will or won’t work. It may change during the actual process, but I feel that this step is crucial for me to have some anchor during the work.
The next step was modeling.
Since I haven’t found the model online, I modeled it from scratch in C4D. The shape is quite simple, so the whole process was straightforward. I decided not to texture it in Substance Painter, but instead made a few decals in PS and used Redshift overlay material for it.
At that moment I wasn’t sure about the final design, I had some ideas in my head, but I was eager to animate, so animatic turned out to be my next step. Usually, I prefer to work from design to animation, cause I feel that it’s a lot easier to work this way, so this case was an exception. The other thing I wanted to try was to make the whole scene in one take and make it seamless instead of cutting it into several scenes, which turned out to be a pretty bad decision, but I was able to overcome it with the use of layers and C4D Take system.
Funny enough, the last stage was the actual design. I’ve created a little mood board for each scene before going into the design process, which helps to stay grounded within a certain style instead of wandering through endless possibilities. I wanted to start with something fun and more abstract and continue into more realistic and define stuff.
